How to Thin Thick, Gloopy Nail Polish the Right Way
A favorite shade goes thick and stringy and drags instead of flowing. Do not bin it yet, most thickened polish can be brought back. The key is using the right thing, because the obvious wrong thing ruins it for good.
Why polish thickens
Polish stays liquid thanks to solvents that evaporate as it dries on your nail. Every time the cap is open, or not sealed tight, a little solvent escapes from the bottle too. Over months that leaves the color thick and gloopy. It is not “gone bad” necessarily; it has just lost solvent.
Use nail polish thinner, a few drops
- 1Get a proper nail polish thinner (it replaces the same solvents).
- 2Add two or three drops into the bottle. Less than you think.
- 3Roll the bottle between your palms to mix, do not shake, which whips in air bubbles.
- 4Test on a swatch. If it still drags, add a drop more. Repeat until it flows.
Never use acetone or remover
This is the one rule that matters. Acetone or nail polish remover do not replace the solvent, they break the polish down, and you end up with a streaky, gritty mess that is genuinely ruined. The hot-water shortcut (temporary)
No thinner and you just need one manicure? Stand the closed bottle in a cup of hot tap water for a couple of minutes. The warmth loosens it enough to get through tonight. It is a patch, not a fix, it thickens straight back up, so get thinner if you want to keep the shade.
Stop it thickening in the first place
- Wipe the neck of the bottle before you close it, so the cap seals cleanly.
- Twist the cap fully shut every time.
- Store bottles upright, somewhere cool and dark, heat and light speed up evaporation.
